I also heard on the radio that the local mountains got snow too. I haven’t been able to see the mountains though and Seymour website has nothing.

Rain Rain Rain and More Rain

Forecast for Vancouver

I guess summer is over…. I had to remove part of my halloween decoration preps cause it is raining so much that it was causing all sort of havoc with them. I hope next Sunday is not like today or last night.

If you look at the forecast picture, you see we are getting to that time of year where they use 15 different ways to tell you it is raining “rain, showers, drizzle, downpour”. I guess all there is to hope for now is for things to get colder. Hey this is prayforsnow.com afterall.

Alex’s BallZOut

Congrats to Alex for launching his new iPhone game BallZOut! Check it out here or here. I think I finally got my iTunes library moved over to my iMac so I can start purchasing stuff again (I was being paranoid that my purchases wouldn’t make it across so I put a freeze on all purchases).

Also if you have tried already, check out the incredibly addictive Q Master!

Workaround to Export Bookmarks for Google Chrome on a Mac

I was just setting up my new iMac yesterday when it came time to re-install Chrome (not much of a Safari fan). I went to my old Mac to see if I could export them. Checked the file menu, checked the chrome menu, and checked preferences and nada. Quick google search and I found that it is a missing feature in Chrome for Mac. One workaround provided by the folks there is to setup bookmarks syncing using your Google account but since I used that for my work bookmarks, I didn’t want to do that and have all my bookmarks merged and messed up. I decided to browse the ~username/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default folder and found a file named Bookmarks. I copied it and moved it over to the new computer and restarted Chrome and it didn’t work right away but next time I restarted Chrome, they came across. Anyway in the end it worked and since I didn’t see anyone else with the same suggestion, I thought I would publish that here.

French Fries Recipe

Since we make our own poutine, we make our own french fries. I though I would share the recipe here:

1) Clean and peel the potatoes. Well some people like to keep the peel but I prefer off.
2) Cut them to whatever size you want. We have one of those french fries maker thing when you put the potato in it and push the handle and out comes nice cut french fries. Very useful. They make fries about the size of fingers.
3) Once cut, put them in a bucket/pot full of water and let them soak for about an hour. You can change the water once or twice. That will get rid of the starch.
4) Fire up your deep fryer but don’t put it full temperature. Put it at medium low.
5) Fry the fries until they get soft but not brown. Essentially you can poke a fork through them easily although the fork doesn’t cut the fries when you poke. It is about 5 minutes.
6) Remove the fries from the fryer and now raise the temperature to high.
7) Fry them again for about 6-7 minutes.
8) Enjoy.

Hockey Night in Canada Going 3D!

I guess it was just a matter of time but Hockey Night in Canada is going 3D. I always thought that sports would be a good use of 3D. More so than movies. You put the proper headset on and you can more or less feel like you are in the stands. Very cool. Give it a few more years before they have a machine like they had in Total Recall or Vanilla Sky. Actually with the advancement in Google Street View and 3D, I believe that you will eventually get to travel to other countries without having to leave your house. Same thing for time travel. Oh and I won’t be buying a 3D TV for a while, my eyes have enough screens to look at without having to also put glasses on. 3D gives me a headache after a while.

Netflix in Canada

In case, you haven’t heard, Netflix is now in Canada. Netflix is a website that for a monthly fee ($7.99 CAD) lets you watch an unlimited number over the internet either on your computer, iPad, iPhone, iPod, or gaming console like Wii or PS3. They have a 30 day free trial that you can cancel at anytime so I figured I would give it a shot. I had heard that they didn’t have the latest new releases and had plenty of old stuff but since I had a long list of old movies I had been meaning to see but never got around to it, I figured that would be ok. Well let’s just say their choices for movies is pretty bad. Out of the 26 movies I had on my list that were not new releases, they only had 2! And just to show that my list wasn’t too crazy, here it is:

Movies they have:

  1. Lord of War
  2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Movies they don’t have:

  1. Terminator Salvation
  2. City Island
  3. Getsmart
  4. Burn After Reading
  5. WALL-E
  6. The bucket List
  7. Vantage Point
  8. Letters from Iwo Jima
  9. Knock Around Guys
  10. Pineapple Express
  11. Blades of Glory
  12. Wild Hogs
  13. The Illusionist
  14. The Prestige
  15. The Matador
  16. The Weatherman
  17. The Interpreter
  18. The Flight of the Phoenix
  19. Secret Window
  20. Mean Girls
  21. The Recruit
  22. Lost (TV)
  23. Dexter (TV)
  24. Entourage (TV)

Now granted I did find these movies that I actually want to see:

  1. American Psycho
  2. Van Wilder
  3. Dazed and Confused
  4. Before the Devil Knows You Are Dead
  5. Amores Perros
  6. Volver
  7. Mad Men (TV)

So I will make use of my free membership but will likely not continue with it for $7.99 a month.
Now last night I watched Lord of War on the iPad app for Netflix. The app is a bit slow so you can browse the movies and do searches but once you start a movie, the quality is quite good. No stoppages, no blurriness or spottiness, stuff that you typically get in streaming movies say on Global TV’s website.

Update: I just received an e-mail today telling me the CD so I can watch Netflix on my Wii is back-ordered so won’t be able to watch on my TV until October. Now they did extend my trial 2 weeks for that.

How to Forward Telus E-Mail to Another E-mail Address

ok I know this article seems rather simple and something you think you wouldn’t need an article for but I had forgotten where to go to do my Telus account e-mail settings and after searching on Google for a bit, I found absolutely nothing on that topic so I figured I better document it here in case someone else runs into the same question.

1) Go to www.telus.com. If you haven’t gone there in a while, you likely will have to pick language and also province you are coming from.
2) Click on the “Your account: Telus Account & e.Bill” link. Yeah I know, not rocket science here but I did forget.
3) Login with your username/password. That should be the same as the first part of the e-mail and the e-mail password
4) Once logged in, under Products and Services, click on “View Details / Modify” link for Telus High Speed
5) Find the e-mail box you want to forward and click on “Update Forwarding” link
6) Select the checkbox and enter the e-mail address you want to forward to and click update
7) Voila

Now the reasons I am forwarding my e-mail address after about 8 years is that I got tired of Telus e-mail for the following reasons
1) You can only send an e-mail from a pop client if you are within the Telus network. Bit of a pain since I now have an iPhone and a laptop.
2) To compensate for 1, you can use their webmail access but it is rather slow. Also they only have 50 MB of space on their server for you. That was ok in 2002 but nowadays you would expect GBs
3) I have more than one device accessing the server and was getting tired of dealing with the same e-mails over and over again. I guess I could have deleted them from the server when the client downloaded it but I prefer keeping some e-mails for records so bit hard to do that.

I now use Google Apps Standard edition which is free and gives me IMAP, decent webmail access (some would call it best in class but I don’t like how they merge threads into a single one a common complaint for gmail), 7.5 GB of space, tons of articles on how to configure things (iPhone, Mail client, Outlook, you name it), and ability to create up to 50 e-mail accounts. Can’t beat that. I guess my only charge is to renew my domain once a year but I have to do that anyway to keep this blog running and keep all my fans happy. Well the 2 that would read all the way here anyway.
